Winter Percussion –
2007-08 Winter Percussion Information
Percussionists (both drum line
and pit) learn and perform a show that combines challenging music and rhythms
with movement and dance, performed in gyms or similar settings. The Winter Percussion team rehearses long and
hard during evenings and weekends from December through April. The hard work paid off. In 2006, Westview’s
Winter Percussion ensemble combined efforts with the varsity Winterguard. The
combined ensemble went undefeated in Pacific Northwest competitions and won the Regional
Championship. In 2007, the Westview winter
percussion ensemble placed fifth at the WGI Percussion World Championships in Dayton, Ohio.

Percussion Ensemble offers specific technique and
chamber music ensemble experience in addition to large group performance
experiences for a growing number of percussionists at Westview. Like the other three ensembles, this class
is offered during the school day and encompasses all percussionists in the band
program. Here the percussionists get
individualized and small group instruction they would be unable to get as part
of the regular band class. These
musicians get advanced training on a wide variety of percussion instruments,
including rudimental percussion, orchestral percussion, world drumming,
keyboard percussion, timpani, basic drum set
skills. In addition to music unique to
the percussion class, these percussionists learn percussion parts for music
being performed by the Freshman, Concert and Symphonic
Bands, and perform with those ensembles at concerts. During the fall, percussion ensemble members
perform as part of the combined marching band.
Westview Winter Classic.
Each March on a Saturday, Westview hosts the Westview Winter Classic, a competition
for Winterguard and Winter Percussion ensembles from
around the area. In addition to
being an important competition venue for our students, this event is an
important fund raiser for the Westview band program
that helps fund program activities for all students throughout the year. Success of the event is dependent on a major
turnout of parent and student volunteers to act as hosts for visiting ensembles
from other schools, direct and assist ensembles warming up and preparing to
perform, to sell tickets, to operate concessions, direct traffic and parking,
and assist judges. It is a fun event to
watch and take part in.
