Performance Ensemble
(Guard)

The Performance Ensemble (also known as the Guard, Color Guard or Auxiliary), is an integral part of Westview’s marching program.  The Guard provides the visual effects necessary for the marching band to achieve greater success.  The Guard is comprised of up to 40 students, and is open by audition.

The Guard performs with the Marching Band in parades, at all home football games, and in fall competitions. The students perform with a variety of equipment, including flags, sabers, and rifles, plus various other props.  The Westview Performance Ensemble has won numerous awards over the years for performance excellence.

Winterguard – An extension of the fall marching and Performance Ensemble program.  Varsity and junior varsity teams are formed in the winter to learn and perform a show set to recorded music, and performed indoors in gyms or similar settings.  Westview’s Winterguard groups perform at a series of competitions around the Portland area.

In 2006, the varsity Winterguard combined efforts with the Winter Percussion ensemble – the combined groups went undefeated in in Pacific Northwest competitions and won the Regional Championship.  In 2005 and 2007, Westview’s Winterguard teams traveled to Dayton, Ohio to compete in the Winterguard International (WGI) World Championships.

Westview Winter Classic.  Each March on a Saturday, Westview hosts the Westview Winter Classic, a competition for Winterguard and Winter Percussion ensembles from around the area.  In addition to being an important competition venue for our students, this event is an important fund raiser for the Westview band program that helps fund program activities for all students throughout the year.  Success of the event is dependent on a major turnout of parent and student volunteers to act as hosts for visiting ensembles from other schools, direct and assist ensembles warming up and preparing to perform, to sell tickets, to operate concessions, direct traffic and parking, and assist judges.  It is a fun event to watch and take part in.
